The Sounds of و and ی

Foundations

Dari keeps the long ē and ō apart from ī and ū, so شیر is two words: shēr (lion) and shīr (milk).

How It Works

LetterSounds likeWordMeaning
وwوقت waqttime
وūدور dūrfar
وōروز rōzday
یyیک yakone
یīشیر shīrmilk
یēشیر shērlion

When two words share their letters, the sentence tells them apart. شیر means milk in a sentence about the fridge and lion in a sentence about the zoo. Learn each new word with its sound: listen, then repeat.

Iranian Persian says ē as ī and ō as ū. Dari keeps all of them, so listen for the difference.

Examples (5)

    A friend is here.

ی in یک is the consonant y (yak), and و in دوست is the long ō (dōst).

    This time is good.

و in وقت is the consonant w (waqt).

    The shop is far.

و in دور is the long ū (dūr).

The milk is in the fridge.

Here شیر is shīr, with the long ī.

The lion is in the zoo.

Here شیر is shēr, with the long ē.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out و in خوب.

خوب (khūb) needs و for its long ū. Without it you write خب, a different word that means well or okay.
