Another and Other With دیگر

The number or یک stays in front of the noun, and دیگر closes the noun phrase.

How It Works

دیگر (dīgar) works like a describing word, so it comes after the noun and joins it with the little ezafe link, which sounds like -i. The link is not written after a consonant. After a silent ه it is ـهٔ, and after ا or و it is ـی.

The number or یک stays in front of the noun. A plural noun with no number means the other ones: شهرهای دیگر. Add an ending to say whose: برادر دیگرم (my other brother).

Before a negative verb, دیگر means anymore, which is a different pattern. After a noun, دیگر means another or other.

  1. یک پیاله چای دیگر می‌خواهم.

    I'd like another cup of tea.

    دیگر follows the whole phrase یک پیاله چای.

  2. رنگ دیگر دارید؟

    Do you have another color?

    A shopper asks for a different color: رنگ دیگر.

  3. شاگردان دیگر در صنف استند.

    The other students are in the classroom.

    شاگردان دیگر means the other students, with ـان for people.

  4. برادر دیگرم در هرات است.

    My other brother is in Herat.

    The ending ـم goes on دیگر and means my other.

  5. امروز وقت ندارم، روز دیگر می‌آیم.

    I don't have time today. I'll come another day.

    روز دیگر means another day, and می‌آیم is a plan.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting دیگر before the noun, the way English puts another.

    یک دیگر پیاله چای می‌خواهم.
    یک پیاله چای دیگر می‌خواهم.

    دیگر follows the noun it describes. Say پیاله چای دیگر.
