Without: bez da / a da ne
Without Doing Something
For careful standard wording, a da plus a negative verb can express “without doing.” Bez da is common in usage but is not the construction recommended by standard-language guides.
How It Works
After a da, choose the negative form appropriate to the tense: a da ne pita, a da nije pitala, a da nitko ne primijeti. A different subject can be stated explicitly in this finite clause.
Bez also takes a genitive noun phrase: bez pozdrava, bez razmišljanja. This may give a shorter alternative when the missing action can be expressed naturally as a noun.
For a shared actor, a negative verbal adverb can sometimes work: ne pogledavši. Check that it expresses the intended time relationship. Do not replace a finite clause with a verbal adverb if that would attach the action to the wrong participant.
