osim ako / samo ako
Unless and Only if
Osim ako means “unless” or “except if.” Samo ako means “only if” and makes the following condition necessary.
How It Works
With osim ako, the main statement normally holds outside the stated exception. Ići ćemo pješice osim ako počne kiša leaves rain as the situation that may change the plan.
With samo ako, the condition must hold for the main statement to apply. The sentence does not automatically promise that the condition alone is sufficient: an invitation may be necessary without guaranteeing attendance.
Preserve any negation carefully. Osim ako ne... cannot be interpreted by deleting ne mechanically; use the intended exception and the whole sentence. A simple affirmative exception is often the clearest way to express an ordinary “unless.”
