prema + Dative / Locative
Toward or According to
Prema can point toward a place or give a criterion.
How It Works
The noun forms in prema gradu, prema školi and prema planu coincide with dative and locative forms. Many descriptions group prema with the dative; some Croatian grammars traditionally analyze it with the locative.
This terminology difference does not change the ordinary endings in these examples. Learn both the form and the intended relationship instead of assuming that every expression of direction requires accusative.
Prema can also describe an attitude toward someone. Context tells you whether the phrase is spatial, evaluative or a statement of accordance.
