danas / jučer / sutra
Today Yesterday and Tomorrow
Danas means today, jučer yesterday and sutra tomorrow. Their reference normally comes from the day of the conversation.
How It Works
Danas radim. describes today. Jučer sam radio. places the activity yesterday, and Sutra ću raditi. places it tomorrow.
A time adverb does not build a tense on its own. The perfect still needs its appropriate auxiliary and participle, while the ordinary future uses a future auxiliary and infinitive. Croatian can also use a present for a scheduled or intended future event when context makes that reading clear.
In a retold story, the reference point may need to be made explicit. A calendar date avoids ambiguity if a message will be read on another day.
