Dates With Croatian Month Names

Level 1

Croatian dates place the day before the month. A named month commonly appears in the genitive after a day number: 5. svibnja.

How It Works

The month names are siječanj, veljača, ožujak, travanj, svibanj, lipanj, srpanj, kolovoz, rujan, listopad, studeni, prosinac. They are written in lowercase unless another rule, such as sentence-initial capitalization, applies.

In a date, use genitive month forms: siječnja, veljače, ožujka, travnja, svibnja, lipnja, srpnja, kolovoza, rujna, listopada, studenoga, prosinca. For example, 5. svibnja is read with an ordinal day and a genitive month.

A date used to say when something happens can take genitive ordinal wording, such as petoga svibnja. Numeric date components use full stops and spaces in ordinary prose. The final case reading depends on the surrounding sentence; keep the written ordinal mark separate from ordinary cardinal counting.

Examples (3)

  1. Dolazim 5. svibnja.

I am arriving on 5 May.

    The month is genitive svibnja.

  2. Sastanak je 12. rujna.

The meeting is on 12 September.

    Rujan changes to rujna.

  3. Vidimo se prvoga siječnja.

We will see each other on 1 January.

The written-out date has genitive ordinal prvoga.
