Reflexive Perfect Without je

Past Se Verbs in the Third Person

Level 2

Ana se vratila means Ana returned. The se construction omits the affirmative auxiliary je in this third-person singular pattern.

How It Works

Compare Ana je došla. with Ana se vratila. The first has ordinary auxiliary je. The second contains reflexive se, so the standard third-person singular perfect has no separate je.

This does not make se a past-tense marker by itself. In Ana se vraća., the verb is present. In the past, the participle vratila supplies the relevant form, and its agreement identifies a feminine singular subject.

Keep auxiliaries outside this narrow pattern: Vratila sam se., Djeca su se vratila. and Ana se nije vratila. Do not delete sam, su or nije merely because se is present.
