Nouns Used in the Plural
One object can have a plural noun.
How It Works
English translations can hide the pattern: vrata su otvorena means the door is open. Su and otvorena are plural.
Gender still matters. Vrata uses neuter plural agreement, while škare uses feminine plural agreement. The noun also has plural case forms, such as vratima.
To count individual objects, Croatian uses counting expressions appropriate to the noun, such as dvoja vrata for two doors. Do not invent an everyday singular simply by removing the last vowel.
Examples (3)
- Vrata su zatvorena.
The door is closed.
Vrata takes plural su and neuter plural zatvorena.
- Ove su škare oštre.
These scissors are sharp.
Škare takes feminine plural agreement.
- Netko stoji pred vratima.
Someone is standing in front of the door.
Vratima is instrumental plural.
