l → o Alternation
L and O Alternations
O in one form can correspond to l in another.
How It Works
In many masculine singular active participles, an older final l appears as o, while other gender forms keep l: čitao, čitala, čitalo.
Compare noun forms such as orao and orla, or pepeo and pepela. Some words combine this change with the loss of a vowel.
This is a pattern to recognize in known word families, not a spelling instruction to turn every final l into o. Learn the masculine and feminine participles together, and check noun case forms individually.
