An ije sequence can become je or e when a word changes form or a related word is made. These changes belong to particular word families.

How It Works

Compare cvijet → cvjetovi and lijep → ljepši. The shorter vowel in the related form is reflected by je. Learn these pairs with their grammatical function, such as plural or comparative.

Other families have e, including vrijeme → vremena and upotrijebiti → upotreba. A visible r does not give you one universal rule: some families and accepted variants retain je. Consult the specific form when the family is unfamiliar.

Spelling also distinguishes separate grammatical words: sljedeći vlak means the next train, but slijedeći upute means following instructions. Pronunciation and spelling do not always correspond to a simple long-versus-short test, so recognize established forms such as rječnik.
