Croatian Word Choices
Closely related languages share many words, but some everyday choices and standard spellings differ. Learn a Croatian expression in context rather than converting individual letters mechanically.
How It Works
Croatian everyday expressions include vlak for a train, kruh for bread and tisuća for a thousand. Learn their forms too: vlakom, kruha, tisuću. Recognizing another regional word does not require using it in every context.
Standard word choice also affects international vocabulary. Croatian uses aktualan, as in aktualna tema, rather than the spelling aktuelan. This cannot be derived by changing every e in a text.
Keep register separate from nationality: conversational, technical and literary synonyms may all occur within Croatian. When adapting a text, preserve the intended meaning and choose an attested Croatian phrase. Do not assume that a word shared with a neighbour must be replaced.
