kako / koliko

How and How Much

Level 4

Kako concerns how something happens or what it is like. Koliko concerns an amount, extent or measurable degree.

How It Works

Use kako when the answer describes a method or manner: polako, pažljivo, rukom. Use koliko for an amount or extent: dva sata, mnogo, tri kilometra.

With another adjective or adverb, koliko can ask about its degree: koliko daleko, koliko često. For dimensions expressed by a declined word, compare kolika je soba; kolika agrees with soba.

Both words can introduce embedded clauses. Ne znam kako radi and ne znam koliko radi leave different information unknown. A perception kako-clause can instead present a scene, so read the introductory verb as well.
