tko / što / gdje / kada / kako / zašto Questions
Basic Question Words
Tko asks about a person and što about a thing or activity. Gdje, kada, kako and zašto ask about location, time, manner and reason.
How It Works
Ask Tko dolazi? when you need the person’s identity, and Što čitaš? when you need the object being read. Tko and što change form when another case is required; these introductory examples use their basic forms.
Gdje živiš? asks about location, Kada dolaziš? about time, Kako putuješ? about manner, and Zašto učiš hrvatski? about a reason. Kada also has the shorter form kad.
For directed movement, later distinguish standard kamo for a destination and kuda for a route. You may hear overlap in conversation, but location is the clearest first use of gdje.
