od / do + Genitive

From and Up to

Level 2

Od and do take genitive complements. They can frame a route or span, such as od kuće do škole.

How It Works

Hodam od kuće do škole. describes the route’s endpoints. Both kuće and škole are genitive. Do does not itself mean entering the destination; it marks reaching the stated limit.

Time expressions also use the pair: od ponedjeljka do petka. Each noun has its own genitive form. A phrase can name only one endpoint when the other is understood.

Od has additional uses, including source, separation and comparisons. This entry teaches the basic endpoint pattern; do not force every od phrase into a literal route interpretation.

Examples (3)

  1. Hodam od kuće do škole.

I walk from home to school.

    Both endpoints are genitive.

  2. Radim od ponedjeljka do petka.

I work from Monday to Friday.

The prepositions frame a time span.

  3. Čekamo do večeri.

    We are waiting until evening.

Do marks the time limit with genitive večeri.
