budi / idi / jedi
Frequent Irregular Commands
Frequent commands use their own stems.
How It Works
Use these as whole commands rather than adding an ending to the infinitive. Ići → idi and jesti → jedi illustrate why a familiar verb’s present and imperative should be learned together.
The plural form can address several people or one person politely. First-person plural invitations include budimo, idimo, jedimo and pijmo.
A command’s tone depends on context and delivery. With a following adjective, agreement still matters: budi pažljiv to a male listener and budi pažljiva to a female listener.
Examples (3)
- Budi pažljiva!

Budi addresses one person; pažljiva identifies a female listener.
- Idi kući!
Go home!
Idi is the singular command of ići.
- Jedite polako i pijte vodu.
Eat slowly and drink water.
Jedite and pijte address several people or one person politely.
