nemoj / nemojmo / nemojte + Infinitive

Negative Instructions

Level 2

Use nemoj for one familiar person, nemojte for plural or polite address, and nemojmo for a group including the speaker.

How It Works

Nemoj kasniti. asks one person not to be late. Nemojte kasniti. addresses several people or one person politely. Nemojmo kasniti. means let us not be late.

Keep any required reflexive se: Nemoj se bojati. Short pronouns take their normal position, as in Nemoj mi lagati. The negation is already built into nemoj.

Croatian also has negative imperatives formed with ne, such as Ne čekaj. The nemoj construction is a useful productive frame, but it does not eliminate the separate choices of verb aspect, tone or politeness.
