unatoč / usprkos + Dative

Despite Something

Level 4

Use dative after unatoč and usprkos in this standard pattern.

How It Works

Compare unatoč kiši and usprkos problemima. The rain or problems do not prevent the main event.

Use dative forms and let adjectives agree: unatoč lošem vremenu. Genitive forms are encountered in usage, but the dative is the standard pattern taught here.

The same relationship can be expressed with a concessive clause such as iako pada kiša. A prepositional phrase names the circumstance as a noun; a clause gives it a finite verb.
