Amb links an action or noun to company, an accompaniment or an instrument.

How It Works

Use amb for company: vinc amb tu means I am coming with you. After the preposition, use a strong pronoun such as mi, tu or ell: amb mi, amb tu, amb ell. Do not substitute the weak object pronoun em in this position.

Use a full noun phrase after amb when needed: amb els meus amics, amb una clau petita. Amb itself does not contract with the article, although el or la can elide before the following noun.

Transport expressions vary: amb tren and en tren are both used. Do not claim that every instrument or means must use amb; per telèfon is an established channel expression, for example. A phrase such as parla amb calma names manner rather than a physical companion. The shared idea is accompaniment in a broad sense, but the established Catalan construction remains the authority.
