Contractions with per plus el

Per + el becomes pel, and per + els becomes pels.

How It Works

Contract the preposition and masculine article when both appear together: caminem pel carrer, passem pels jardins. The contraction does not change the noun's meaning or introduce a plural by itself; pels contains plural els.

Feminine articles remain separate, as in per la plaça and per les places. If singular el or la becomes l', write per l': per l'avinguda. Do not use pel before a word whose article should be elided.

Distinguish per from per a. Per al curs contains per a + el and normally identifies intended use or destination. Pel curs contains per + el and has a different structure. The extra a is meaningful in varieties and registers that maintain the distinction.
