Gràcies gives thanks; si us plau makes a request courteous.

How It Works

Use gràcies on its own or moltes gràcies for stronger thanks. Moltes agrees with plural feminine gràcies. A common reply is de res; you can also acknowledge a favor with no es mereixen in suitable contexts.

Si us plau can accompany a short request: un cafè, si us plau. In writing, commas often separate it from the main request. The fixed expression is useful even before you know a full polite verb construction.

For a longer request, use a question such as em pot ajudar, si us plau? when addressing vostè, or em pots ajudar? for tu. Politeness depends on tone and the whole exchange as well as on adding this phrase. Match the address form consistently.
