ser/estar + Participle
Ser and Estar with Participles
Ser plus participle presents a passive event; estar plus participle commonly presents a resulting state.
How It Works
La porta va ser oberta describes an opening event. La porta està oberta describes the door's current state. The two can refer to the same real-world situation from different viewpoints, but they do not make identical assertions.
In both constructions, an adjectival or passive participle agrees with the subject: les portes estan obertes, les portes van ser obertes. A perfect with haver has a different agreement pattern and should not be treated as another form of this passive.
A per phrase can name the agent of a ser passive. An estar state does not normally need such an agent phrase. Tense changes the time of the event or state without removing the contrast between them.
