Temporary States with Estar

Level 2

Estar can describe a temporary or resulting condition; adjective choice and context still matter.

How It Works

Use estar for many conditions: estic cansat, està contenta, estem bé. An adjective agrees with the person or thing described, while bé is an invariable adverb. Accents distinguish estàs and està and belong to their stressed final syllables.

Temporary state is a helpful starting point for expressions such as està cansada or estan contents, but not a complete rule for every adjective. With certain physical descriptions and participles, ser and estar can both occur depending on meaning and variety: la porta és/està oberta.

Estar can emphasize a resulting condition, as in el got està trencat. Keep an adjective or participle in agreement with the thing described, even across the verb: les finestres estan obertes. For being well, use the adverb bé, not the adjective bo merely because English says good.
