quan, com, quant
Quan, Com and Quant
Quan asks about time, com about manner, and quant about quantity.
How It Works
Quan vens? asks when you are coming. Com vens? asks how, perhaps by train or on foot. Quant costa? asks the price. The final t distinguishes quantity quant from time quan, even where pronunciation makes it less obvious.
Before a noun, quant agrees: quant temps, quanta aigua, quants dies and quantes persones. When it modifies a verb directly, use the invariable masculine-looking form: quant pesa? Com does not agree, and neither does quan.
These question words also introduce indirect questions: no sé quan arriba, no sé quant costa. An indirect question does not require a question mark if the whole sentence is a statement. Unlike què, the words quan, com and quant have no written accent.
