Definite Articles before Possessives
A possessive before a noun usually follows a definite article.
How It Works
El meu llibre and la teva bossa are ordinary possessive noun phrases. The article and possessive both agree with the noun. Do not omit the article automatically just because English says my book without the.
Some established expressions omit it: casa meva and a casa teva put the possessive after casa. Kinship expressions and regional possessive systems also have special patterns, including mon pare or ma mare. Learn these as specific constructions rather than extending their article omission to every noun.
After ser, a possessive can identify ownership without repeating the noun: aquesta bossa és meva. The form still agrees with bossa. Compare la meva bossa, a full noun phrase, with és meva, a predicate saying whose it is.
