себе си
The Reflexive Pronoun Себе Си
Себе си means oneself for every person: Купих го за себе си (I bought it for myself).
How It Works
1. Short and long. Like other pronouns, the reflexive has a short and a long form. The short се belongs to reflexive verbs: Облякох се (I got dressed). The long form себе си is used where a short form cannot go.
2. After prepositions.
- за себе си (for/about oneself): Мисли само за себе си. (He only thinks about himself.)
- със себе си (with oneself): Винаги нося вода със себе си. (I always carry water with me.)
- на себе си (at/to oneself): Ядосана съм на себе си. (I am angry with myself.)
- пред себе си (in front of oneself): Видя пред себе си голяма къща. (He saw a big house in front of him.)
3. For emphasis. As a direct object, себе си stresses the person: Видях себе си на снимката (I saw myself in the photo), Обвинява само себе си (He blames only himself).
4. Same form for every person. Аз мисля за себе си, ти мислиш за себе си, те мислят за себе си. In the third person this matters: Иван говори за себе си is about Ivan himself, but Иван говори за него is about another man.
5. Fixed phrases. Бъди себе си! (Be yourself!), Не е на себе си. (He is not himself.), Дойде на себе си. (He came round.) For stronger emphasis, speakers add сам: сам себе си (his very own self).
Examples (6)
- Той говори само за себе си.
He talks only about himself.
- Купих го за себе си.
I bought it for myself.
- Винаги нося вода със себе си.
I always carry water with me.
After с, use със before a word starting with с.
- Ядосана съм на себе си.
I am angry with myself.
- Бъди себе си!
Be yourself!
- Видях себе си на снимката.

The long form puts weight on the object: myself, not someone else.
Common Mistakes
Using него to mean the subject, as in "Ivan thinks only about himself".
Иван мисли само за него.Иван мисли само за себе си.За него points to another man. When the person is the subject, use себе си.
Dropping си from the long form.
Той говори за себе.Той говори за себе си.The long reflexive is always the two words себе си.
