The Future Perfect

До петък ще съм завършил. (By Friday I will have finished.) Think of it as the present perfect moved into the future.

How It Works

1. Forms (завърша, to finish):

  • ще съм завършил / завършила
  • ще си завършил / завършила
  • ще е завършил / завършила / завършило
  • ще сме / ще сте / ще са завършили

The auxiliary is the future of съм; the participle is the л-participle.

2. Finished before a future point. A time phrase often sets the deadline: до петък (by Friday), след година (in a year), когато дойдеш (when you come). After когато the verb stays in the present: Когато дойдеш, ще сме вечеряли. The plain future ще завърша до петък (I will finish by Friday) is also correct; the future perfect stresses the finished state.

3. A confident guess. Like English "will have", it can guess about something that has probably already happened: Не звъни сега, децата вече ще са заспали.

4. Negative. As with every future, use няма да: Няма да съм свършил преди осем.

5. Reflexive verbs. Се and си follow съм/си/сме/сте/са, as in След година ще сме се преместили. With third-person singular е, they precede it: ще се е преместил.

    When you come, we will have had dinner.

  3. Докато се върнеш, ще съм приготвила вечерята.

    By the time you get back, I will have made dinner.

    приготвила: the speaker is a woman.

  4. Няма да съм свършил преди осем.

    I won't have finished before eight.

  5. Не звъни сега, децата вече ще са заспали.

    Don't call now, the children will have fallen asleep by now.

    A confident guess about the present.

  6. След година ще сме се преместили в новия апартамент.

    In a year we will have moved into the new flat.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting participle agreement.

    До петък тя ще е завършил.
    До петък тя ще е завършила.

    The л-participle agrees with the subject: тя → завършила.

  • Negating with не in the middle of the form.

    Ще не съм завършил до петък.
    Няма да съм завършил до петък.

    The future is negated with няма да, placed before the whole verb form.

  • Using the present form instead of the л-participle.

    До петък ще съм завърша доклада.
    До петък ще съм завършил доклада.

    After ще съм the verb must be the л-participle: завършил, завършила or завършили.
