липсва ми
Missing Someone
Липсваш ми. means 'I miss you'. Word for word it says 'You are missing to me'.
How It Works
1. Who is the subject. In English you say 'I miss you'. In Bulgarian the one you miss is the subject:
- Липсваш ми. (I miss you.)
- Мама ми липсва. (I miss Mom.)
- Липсват ни приятелите. (We miss our friends.)
- Липсвам ли ти? (Do you miss me?)
2. The forms. липсвам, липсваш, липсва, липсваме, липсвате, липсват. For missing someone in the past, the imperfect is the usual form: Много ми липсваше. (I missed you a lot.) The future is Ще ми липсваш. (I will miss you.)
3. Where the pronoun goes. If the verb starts the sentence, the pronoun follows it: Липсваш ми. If anything comes before the verb, the pronoun moves in front of the verb: Много ми липсваш., Не ми липсва., Мария ми липсва. See placement of short pronouns.
4. Adding emphasis. To stress who misses, add на with a full pronoun, and keep the short one too: На мен ми липсва морето, а на него не. (I miss the sea, but he doesn't.) See doubling the object.
5. Other meanings. The same verb means 'to lack' or 'to be missing': Липсва ми опит. (I lack experience.) Липсват два стола. (Two chairs are missing.)
6. A family of verbs. Харесва ми (I like it) and трябва ми (I need it) work the same way.
Examples (6)
