я/е Alternation
The Я-Е Alternation
Some roots have a changeable я: бял (white) but бели (white, plural); място (place) but места (places). The same word changes letters as its endings change.
How It Works
1. Where it comes from. These roots once had the old letter ѣ (yat). In the eastern dialects that became the standard, it is pronounced я or е depending on its surroundings. Only these roots alternate, so each one has to be learned.
2. The rule, condition by condition.
- Я stays when stressed and the next syllable is hard: бял, бяла, бяло; голям, голяма; хляб, хлябове; видял, видяла.
- Е before a soft syllable (one with е or и), even under stress: бели, белият, големи, видели, хлебен.
- Е when unstressed: място but места; сняг but снегове and снегът (the stress moves to the ending); хляб but хлебопекарна (bakery). See word stress.
- Е before ж, ш, ч, щ or й: сняг but снежна; грях but грешка.
3. Where you meet it most.
- Adjective endings: бял, бяла, бяло, бели (see adjective agreement).
- Noun plurals with several endings, including -а, -и and -ове: място — места, бряг — брегове (see plural -и).
- The л-participle of many verbs: видял, видяла, видяло, видели; вървял — вървели.
4. Not every я changes. Only roots that had yat alternate. A permanent я stays in every form: ясен — ясни (clear), поляна — поляни (meadow). The norm also keeps a few exceptions, such as ядене (food), with я before е. A few verb forms are still unsettled in the norm; when in doubt, check the Официален правописен речник.
5. Pronunciation. In western dialects many speakers say е everywhere (бел хлеб), but standard writing follows this rule. Unstressed е in места is pronounced clearly as е; compare unstressed vowel reduction, which affects а, ъ, о and у instead.
Examples (5)
- Ризата е бяла, а чорапите са бели.
The shirt is white, and the socks are white.
бяла: stressed, next syllable ла is hard. бели: the next syllable ли has и.
- Този град е голям, но София е по-голяма, а големите градове са шумни.
This town is big, but Sofia is bigger, and big cities are noisy.
голям, голяма keep я; големите has е because the next syllable has и.
- Той е видял всичко, а ние не сме видели нищо.
He has seen everything, but we have not seen anything.
- Мястото е хубаво, но местата са малко.
The place is nice, but there are few seats.
In места the stress moves to the ending, so the root vowel is unstressed and becomes е.
- Купих два хляба от хлебопекарната.
I bought two loaves of bread from the bakery.
Common Mistakes
Keeping я before a syllable with и.
Чорапите са бяли.Чорапите са бели.The next syllable ли contains и, so the changeable я becomes е.
Keeping я in the plural of an adjective or participle.
Децата вече са голями и са видяли много.Децата вече са големи и са видели много.Both plural forms end in -и, which turns я into е: големи, видели.
Changing я to е when nothing triggers it.
Ризата е бела.Ризата е бяла.Here the vowel is stressed and the next syllable ла is hard, so standard spelling keeps я. Бела is how many western dialects pronounce it, but it is not the standard written form.
