Помагат си един на друг. (They help each other.) Говорим един с друг. (We talk with each other.) The preposition sits between един and друг.

How It Works

1. The preposition goes in the middle.

  • един на друг: to each other. Пишем си един на друг. (We write to each other.)
  • един с друг: with each other. Не говорят един с друг. (They don't talk to each other.)
  • един за друг: for or about each other. Грижат се един за друг. (They take care of each other.)
  • един от друг: from each other. Учим се един от друг. (We learn from each other.)
  • един без друг: without each other. Не могат един без друг. (They can't manage without each other.)

2. Gender. Use една ... друга when everyone involved is female or the nouns are feminine, and едно ... друго can follow neuter nouns: Сестрите се грижат една за друга. Mixed groups take един ... друг, and with децата both едно на друго and един на друг are used.

3. With се and си. Many verbs already mean each other with се: Обичат се. (They love each other.) Adding един друг stresses it: Обичат се един друг. With на, the short form си usually appears too: Помагат си един на друг. Compare verbs with си.

4. Not the same as себе си. Себе си means oneself: Говорят за себе си (They talk about themselves), but Говорят един за друг (They talk about each other).

  • Putting the preposition before един.

    Говорим с един друг.
    Говорим един с друг.

    The preposition always goes between the two words: един с друг, един на друг.

  • Leaving out the preposition the verb needs.

    Те говорят един друг всеки ден.
    Те говорят един с друг всеки ден.

    Говоря needs с (talk with someone), so the pair becomes един с друг.

  • Using себе си for each other.

    Приятелите мислят за себе си.
    Приятелите мислят един за друг.

    За себе си means about themselves. To say about each other, use един за друг.
