Other and Another

Друг means "other", "another" or "different". It changes like an adjective: друг ден, друга стая, друго нещо, други хора.

How It Works

1. Four forms. Like any adjective (see adjective agreement):

  • друг ден (another day) — masculine
  • друга стая (another room) — feminine
  • друго нещо (something else) — neuter
  • други хора (other people) — plural

2. "The other". Add the article to друг itself, because it is the first word of the phrase (see articles on adjectives): другият ми брат (my other brother), другата страна (the other side), другите хора (the other people). For the masculine form, use другият for the subject or a definite complement after съм, and другия for an object or after a preposition.

3. After нещо, някой, никой, нищо. Нещо друго? (Anything else?), някой друг (someone else), нищо друго (nothing else).

4. Друг or още един? Друг means a different one. For "one more of the same", say още един / още една / още едно (see още): Още едно кафе, моля. (Another coffee, please.) If you say друго кафе, you are asking for a different kind of coffee.

5. On its own. Другите means "the others": Другите вече тръгнаха. (The others have already left.)

  1. Ще дойда друг ден.

    I'll come another day.

  2. Имате ли друга стая?

    Do you have another room?

    Стая is feminine, so друг becomes друга.

  3. Искаш ли нещо друго?

    Do you want anything else?

  4. Другият ми брат живее във Варна.

    My other brother lives in Varna.

    The article goes on другият, the first word of the phrase.

  5. Другите хора вече тръгнаха.

    The other people have already left.

  6. Това е съвсем друг въпрос.

    That's a completely different question.

Common Mistakes

  • Not matching друг to the noun.

    друг стая
    друга стая

    Стая is feminine, so it needs друга. Use друго for neuter nouns and други for plurals.

  • Using друго to ask for one more coffee of the same kind.

    Искам друго кафе.
    Искам още едно кафе.

    Друго кафе usually means a different kind of coffee. To ask for one more of the same, use още едно.

  • Putting the article on the noun instead of друг.

    друг братът
    другият брат

    Only the first word of the phrase takes the article, so it goes on друг.
