да + Imperfect or Pluperfect

1. Unreal present: да + imperfect. See the imperfect.

• Да имах повече време! (If only I had more time!)
• Да можех да летя! (If only I could fly!)
• Да бях богат! (If only I were rich!) For съм, бях serves as the imperfect.

2. Unreal past: да + pluperfect. See the pluperfect. The participle agrees with the subject:

• Да бях знаел! / Да бях знаела! (If only I had known!)
• Да бяхме тръгнали по-рано! (If only we had left earlier!)

3. Negative. Не comes right after да: Да не бях казала нищо! (If only I hadn't said anything!)

4. Де да. In speech, де да adds longing: Де да беше истина! (If only it were true!)

5. Unreal wishes versus real ones. With the present tense, да expresses a real, possible wish, as in toasts: Да си жив и здрав! (Long life and good health to you!). See wishes and toasts with да. For a hope about something that may be true, use дано: Дано да е истина! (I hope it is true!)

6. The same forms in conditions. A full sentence with a result uses ако: Ако бях богат, щях да пътувам. See unreal present conditions and past counterfactual conditions.
