Participle

Past Counterfactual Conditions

Level 4Sounds Like ako bâh + minalo pričastie

(If I had known, I would have come.) Both halves are about the past, and neither of them really happened.

How It Works

1. The two halves.

  • Result: the future in the past:

2. Agreement. The л-participle agrees with the subject: Ако тя беше знаела, Ако вие бяхте дошли. With polite Вие, the participle is plural even for one person.

3. Negatives. Negate the condition with не before the auxiliary: Ако не беше валяло. Negate the result with

4. Mixing times. A past condition can have a present result: (If he had studied, he would have a better job now.)

5. The everyday shortcut. In speech, the imperfect is also used for the past: This form can mean "if I knew" or "if I had known", and context decides (see unreal present conditions). The pluperfect with бях is the clearly past choice.

6. Word order. Short pronouns go before the auxiliary: (If you had told me).

Examples (6)

If I had known, I would have come.

If he had studied, he would have passed the exam.

If we had left earlier, we would not have missed the train.

The negative result uses

If you had told me, I would have helped you.

казала: the person addressed is a woman.

If it hadn't rained, we would have gone to the beach.

If he had studied, he would have a better job now.

A past condition with a present result.

Common Mistakes

  • Using щях да in the condition, as in English "if I would have known".

In an unreal past condition, щях да belongs in the result, and the ако clause uses the pluperfect бях знаел. After ако, щях да can only mean "if I was going to ...", which does not fit here.

  • Forgetting to make the participle agree with the subject.

The л-participle agrees in gender and number: тя → знаела.

  • Using the plain future in the result.

An unreal past result uses the past form щях да, not ще.
