дано

Hoping with Дано

Level 4Sounds Like dano

Put дано in front of a verb to say I hope or let's hope: Дано успееш! (I hope you succeed!), Дано да не вали. (Let's hope it doesn't rain.)

How It Works

1. Hoping about the future. Use a present-tense verb, usually perfective for a single event:

  • Дано успееш на изпита. (I hope you pass the exam.)
  • Дано автобусът дойде навреме. (Let's hope the bus comes on time.)

2. Hoping about now or the past. For a present state, use the present of съм; for something that may already have happened, use the perfect:

  • Дано да е вкъщи. (I hope he's at home.)
  • Дано не е забравил. (I hope he hasn't forgotten.)

3. With or without да. Both are standard. Negation comes after да, in front of the verb: Дано да не вали or Дано не вали.

4. Дано or надявам се. Надявам се is an ordinary verb and needs a linking word: Надявам се, че ще успееш or Надявам се да успееш. Дано is shorter and warmer, and it works as a reply on its own: Ще има ли места? — Дано! (Will there be seats? — Let's hope so!)

5. Hope as a purpose. After a main clause, дано can add the result you are hoping for: Ще отида там, дано го срещна. (I'll go there in the hope of meeting him.)

For a wish that can no longer come true, use да + a past form instead: Да бях там! (If only I were there!)

Examples (6)

  1. Дано успееш на изпита!

I hope you pass the exam!

  2. Дано да не вали утре.

Let's hope it doesn't rain tomorrow.

Не comes after да, right before the verb.

  3. Дано автобусът дойде навреме.

Let's hope the bus comes on time.

  4. Дано не е забравил за срещата.

I hope he hasn't forgotten about the meeting.

Не е забравил is the perfect: a hope about something that may already have happened.

  5. Дано да ти хареса подаръкът.

I hope you like the present.

  6. Ще му се обадя пак, дано този път вдигне.

I'll call him again; hopefully he'll pick up this time.

Common Mistakes

    Дано не да вали.
    Дано да не вали.

Не comes after да and stands in front of the verb: Дано да не вали.

  • Using че after дано.

    Дано, че ще дойде.
    Дано да дойде.

Че belongs to надявам се, че. Дано takes the verb directly or with да.
