Unstressed Vowel Reduction
Without stress, а sounds close to ъ and о close to у. The spelling does not change: момчѐ sounds close to [мумчѐ].
How It Works
Two pairs come close. Without stress, two pairs of vowels sound almost the same:
- а and ъ: the final а of Со̀фия sounds close to ъ, and кафѐ sounds close to [къфѐ].
- о and у: момчѐ (boy) sounds close to [мумчѐ], and вода̀ (water) close to [вуда̀].
Only part of the way. The vowel moves toward its partner but is not swallowed. The standard language does not drop unstressed vowels.
Е and и stay clear. In standard Bulgarian, unstressed е is not said as и: say детѐ (child), not [дитѐ], and зелѐн (green), not [зилѐн]. Saying е like и is typical of eastern dialects, not of the standard.
How to spell. Find a related form where the vowel is stressed: вода̀ — во̀ди (waters), градѝна (garden) — гра̀д. If no form helps, learn the spelling together with the word.
Stress is the key. The clear vowel is always in the stressed syllable, so knowing where the stress falls helps you understand what you hear. See word stress and the vowel ъ. A separate verb-ending spelling rule gives stressed чета̀ the sound [четъ̀]; this is not unstressed-vowel reduction. See the first conjugation.

Common Mistakes
Writing у for an unstressed о.
Момчето пие вуда.Момчето пие вода.The plural во̀ди has a stressed о you can hear clearly, so вода is written with о.
Writing ъ for an unstressed а.
Детето е в гръдината.Детето е в градината.Градина comes from град, where the а is stressed and clear.
Writing и for an unstressed е.
Дитето е тук.Детето е тук.The spelling keeps е, and so does the standard pronunciation. Saying е like и is a feature of eastern dialects.
