k, ka + Dative
Toward Someone
K prijatelju means toward a friend, and ka kući means toward the house.
How It Works
K and ka are small words for "toward" or "to", and they need the dative case.
| Phrase | Meaning |
|---|---|
| k prijatelju | to a friend |
| k meni | to me, to my place |
| ka kući | toward the house |
| ka rijeci | toward the river |
Both forms are correct. The short k is common before most consonants, and ka is heard before k and g, and when a cluster would be hard to say. Pronouns take the long form: k meni, k tebi.
When the goal is a person's house, many speakers use idem kod prijatelja, with kod and the genitive. Idem k prijatelju is also standard, and it can sound a little more careful. Both are fine, so you will hear both.
K and ka are said together with the next word, so you do not pause after them.
