How It Works

Here are the numbers from one to ten.

One and two follow the gender of the noun.

  • jedan stol, jedna kafa, jedno dijete
  • dva stola, dvije kafe, dva sela

The noun after a number is not the usual plural. After two, three and four it has a special counting form that looks like the genitive singular (dva stola, tri kafe), and after five and above it is the genitive plural (pet stolova). Later entries explain this.

In a café you will use these numbers to order: Dvije kafe, molim.

Examples (5)

  1. Jedan, dva, tri!

    One, two, three!

This is the start of the counting row.

  2. Dvije kafe, molim.

    Two coffees, please.

Kafa is feminine, so the number is dvije.

  3. Tri ćevapa, molim.

    Three ćevapi, please.

After tri the noun takes the form ćevapa.

  4. Moja sestra ima devet godina.

My sister is nine years old.

    Devet stays the same.

  5. Pet, šest, sedam, osam.

    Five, six, seven, eight.

These numbers do not change for gender.

Common Mistakes

  • Using dva with a feminine noun.

    Dva kafe, molim.
    Dvije kafe, molim.

    Feminine nouns take dvije.

  • Putting the plural -i on the noun after tri.

    Tri ćevapi, molim.
    Tri ćevapa, molim.

After two, three and four the noun is not in the plain plural.
