Puta is the genitive form of put (time, occasion), the same noun that appears in put (road). Numbers from five up take the genitive plural. With the number two to four, puta is still the same form.

Frequency can also be said with a time word: jednom sedmično, dvaput dnevno, jednom godišnje (once a week, twice a day, once a year).

To ask, use Koliko puta? (How many times?).

The word put has another plural when it means roads (putevi), so keep these two meanings apart.

Examples (4)

  1. Idem u Mostar jednom godišnje.

I go to Mostar once a year.

    Jednom godišnje gives the frequency.

  2. Pijem kafu dvaput dnevno.

I drink coffee twice a day.

    Dvaput means two times.

  3. Bio sam tamo tri puta.

I have been there three times.

    Tri puta uses puta.

  4. Nekoliko puta sam je zvala.

    I called her several times.

    Nekoliko is followed by puta.

Common Mistakes

  • Using put after the number.

    Bio sam tamo tri put.
    Bio sam tamo tri puta.

The form after the number is puta.
