How Bhojpuri Differs From Hindi
Bhojpuri has its own words and endings, so Hindi words cannot just be dropped in.
How It Works
If you know Hindi, Bhojpuri will feel familiar, but these small words change. Keep this list in mind.
| Hindi | Bhojpuri | Example |
|---|---|---|
| है | बा, बानी, बाड़ऽ; ह for who or what | चाय बा |
| मैं | हम | हम जाइब |
| तुम | तू | तू कहाँ बाड़ऽ? |
| आप | रउआ | रउआ बइठीं |
| को | के | हमरा के बोलावऽ |
| का, की | के (never changes) | नेहा के घर |
| ने | none | ऊ खइलस |
The past tense has no ने. The subject stays plain and the verb agrees with the subject. Many verbs also end differently: Hindi जाता है is Bhojpuri जाला.
Do not turn a Hindi sentence into Bhojpuri by changing one word. Use the Bhojpuri construction, as the later entries show.
Examples (5)
- हम घरे बानी।
I am at home.
बानी replaces Hindi हूँ and घरे uses the -ए ending.
- ऊ खाना खइलस।
He ate food.
No ने: the subject stays ऊ.
- नेहा के घर छपरा में बा।
Neha's house is in Chhapra.
के is the same for any thing owned, and बा replaces है.
- ऊ लइका के किताब दिहलस।
He gave the boy a book.
के marks the person who receives.
- हमार किताब कहाँ बा?
Where is my book?
हमार and बा are Bhojpuri forms.
Common Mistakes
Using ने in the past, as Hindi does.
ऊ ने खाना खइलस।ऊ खाना खइलस।Bhojpuri never uses ने; the subject stays plain.
Using Hindi है for is.
ऊ घर पर है।ऊ घर पर बा।Use बा and its person forms to say where or how someone is.
