बाटे / बाटीं
The Copula Forms बाटे and बाटीं
Many writers, especially from Gorakhpur and Deoria, use बाटे for बा and बाटीं for बानी.
How It Works
Gorakhpur and Deoria, in eastern Uttar Pradesh, are home to many Bhojpuri writers. Their "to be" begins with बाट.
| Who | Eastern | Ara |
|---|---|---|
| हम | बाटीं | बानी |
| तू | बाटऽ | बाड़ऽ |
| ऊ (m) | बाटे | बा |
| ऊ (resp.), they | बाटें | बाड़ें |
The meaning and use are the same. Write बा, बानी, बाड़ऽ and बाड़ें, and recognise the eastern forms.
Both groups use the same helper in the -त बा pattern: पढ़त बाटे in the east, पढ़त बा in Ara. नइखे also appears in their writing. If you read a Gorakhpur writer, expect बाट- wherever you would see बा or बाड़- in this course.
