Formal Belarusian gives a cause with з прычыны + genitive: Ён не прыйшоў з прычыны хваробы. (He did not come due to illness.)
How It Works
З прычыны + genitive explains why something happened or did not happen: з прычыны хваробы (due to illness), з прычыны дрэннага надвор'я (because of bad weather), з прычыны аварыі (because of an accident).
To give the reason as a clause, you need таго, што: з прычыны таго, што шмат людзей захварэла (because many people fell ill).
Style. This is the language of notices, reports and explanations at work. In conversation, бо and таму што sound more natural: Ён не прыйшоў, бо захварэў.
Choosing a cause word
- з прычыны + genitive: formal, neutral or unwelcome causes.
- у сувязі з + instrumental: formal, often for changes and announcements.
- з-за + genitive: everyday, usually a bad cause.
- дзякуючы + dative: a helpful cause, with a note of thanks.
