How It Works
У сувязі з + instrumental gives the reason for a change, a decision or an event. You will see it on doors, in announcements and in the news: у сувязі з рамонтам (due to repairs), у сувязі з надвор'ем (because of the weather), у сувязі з юбілеем (on the occasion of the anniversary).
To give the reason as a whole clause, add тым, што: У сувязі з тым, што ішоў моцны снег, рэйс адклалі. (Because heavy snow was falling, the flight was postponed.) The short phrase у гэтай сувязі means in this connection and links back to what was just said.
У or ў? The preposition у follows the rule for у and ў after a vowel. At the start of a sentence or after a comma, write у: У сувязі з рамонтам... After a word ending in a vowel, write ў: Урок адменены ў сувязі з хваробай.
Other ways to give a cause. З прычыны with the genitive is just as formal. З-за is everyday and usually marks a bad cause. Праз can also mean because of, often with blame. Дзякуючы names a helpful cause. In conversation, a clause with бо or таму што is simplest.
