Agreement with Numbers and Quantities
Number subjects take a singular verb for an amount (Прыйшло пяць чалавек.) or a plural verb for individuals acting (Пяць студэнтаў прыйшлі раней.).
How It Works
When a number or quantity word is the subject, the verb has two options.
Singular (neuter in the past). The group is treated as one amount. This is typical when the verb comes first, when the number is approximate, and with inanimate nouns:
- Прыйшло пяць чалавек. (Five people came.)
- Сабралася чалавек каля дзесяці. (About ten people gathered.)
- Мінула два тыдні. (Two weeks went by.)
Plural. Each person acts, especially when the subject comes first and names people: Пяць студэнтаў прыйшлі на заняткі раней. (Five students came to class early.) Use the plural when the phrase has words like усе or гэтыя: Гэтыя два пакоі былі пустыя.
Special cases.
- Два, тры, чатыры with people, subject first: usually plural: Дзве дзяўчынкі сустракалі гасцей.
- Numbers ending in адзін: the verb agrees with адзін in the singular: Дваццаць адзін студэнт прыйшоў.
- Большасць, меншасць, шэраг, мноства: usually singular, with the gender of that word: Большасць студэнтаў здала экзамен.
- Collective numerals such as трое: usually singular: Прыехала трое братоў.
- Некалькі, шмат: singular for an amount, plural for active people: Некалькі сяброў дапамаглі нам.
- Time phrases with хвілін, гадзін, дзён, тыдняў: singular: Мінула дзесяць дзён.
In the past singular, the verb is neuter (прыйшло), because the number itself has no gender. Only большасць (feminine), шэраг (masculine) and similar nouns give the verb their own gender.

Common Mistakes
Making the singular verb masculine.
Прыйшоў пяць чалавек.Прыйшло пяць чалавек.A number has no gender, so a singular past verb is neuter: прыйшло. The plural прыйшлі is also possible.
Using a plural verb after a number ending in адзін.
Дваццаць адзін студэнт прыйшлі.Дваццаць адзін студэнт прыйшоў.When the number ends in адзін, the noun is singular and the verb agrees with it in the singular.
