Polite Address with Спадар and Спадарыня

Level 3Sounds Like spadar í spadarynâ

To address someone politely, put спадар (Mr.) or спадарыня (Mrs., Ms.) before the name: Добры дзень, спадар Іваноў! (Hello, Mr. Ivanou!). Then speak to them with вы.

How It Works

1. With surnames and first names. Спадар and спадарыня go with a surname (спадар Мароз) or a first name (спадарыня Ганна). One word, спадарыня, covers both Mrs. and Ms.

2. They change for case.

  • спадар: спадара, спадару, спадара, спадаром, (аб) спадару
  • спадарыня: спадарыні, спадарыні, спадарыню, спадарыняй, (аб) спадарыні

The name changes along with them: Я дзякую спадару Іванову (I thank Mr. Ivanou), Мы чакаем спадарыню Ганну (We are waiting for Ms. Hanna).

3. Plurals and groups. Спадары means "gentlemen" and спадарыні means "ladies". To greet a mixed audience, say Шаноўнае спадарства! (Ladies and gentlemen!).

4. Letters. A formal letter often begins Паважаны спадар …! or Паважаная спадарыня …! (Dear Mr./Ms. …).

5. Polite вы. Use вы with anyone you call спадар or спадарыня (see agreement with polite вы). In formal settings, Belarusians also use the first name with the patronymic: Ганна Іванаўна (see patronymics). You may also hear пан and пані in the same role.

Examples (6)

  2. Спадарыня Ганна, вы можаце мне дапамагчы?

Ms. Hanna, can you help me?

Спадарыня with a first name, and polite вы.

  3. Паважаная спадарыня Ковальчык!

    Dear Ms. Kavalchyk,

A typical opening line of a formal letter.

  4. Я патэлефаную спадару Іванову заўтра.

I will call Mr. Ivanou tomorrow.

    Dative: спадару Іванову.

  5. Вы не бачылі спадара Мароза?

    Have you seen Mr. Maroz?

Accusative of a person: спадара Мароза.

  6. Шаноўнае спадарства, вітаем вас на канцэрце!

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving спадар and the name in the nominative.

    Я дзякую спадар Іваноў.
    Я дзякую спадару Іванову.

Дзякаваць takes the dative, so both спадар and the surname change: спадару Іванову.

  • Mixing спадар with informal ты.

    Спадар Іваноў, ты можаш пачакаць?
    Спадар Іваноў, вы можаце пачакаць?

Спадар is a polite form of address, so the intended polite tone needs вы and a plural verb.

  • Not declining спадарыня.

    Я пішу ліст спадарыня Ганне.
    Я пішу ліст спадарыні Ганне.

In the dative, спадарыня becomes спадарыні, just like the name Ганна becomes Ганне.
