дзякаваць + Dative

Thanking Someone in the Dative

Level 3Sounds Like dzâkavacʹ + davalʹny

You thank to someone in Belarusian: Дзякую табе (Thank you), Дзякуем вам за дапамогу (We thank you for the help).

How It Works

1. Forms. Like other verbs in -аваць, the -ава- becomes -у- in the present: я дзякую, ты дзякуеш, ён дзякуе, мы дзякуем, вы дзякуеце, яны дзякуюць. Past: дзякаваў, дзякавала, дзякавалі. Perfective: падзякаваць (падзякую, падзякаваў).

2. The person is in the dative. Ask каму? (to whom?):

  • Дзякую табе! (Thank you!)
  • Дзякую вам! (Thank you! — polite or plural)
  • Я хачу падзякаваць маме. (I want to thank my mom.)
  • Дзякую ўсім! (Thank you, everyone!)

See the pronoun case forms: мне, табе, яму, ёй, нам, вам, ім. Russian uses the accusative with its verb for thanking, so learners who know Russian often say цябе by mistake.

3. The reason: за + accusative. Дзякуем вам за дапамогу. Ён падзякаваў нам за вячэру. For a whole clause, use за тое, што or simply што: Дзякую, што прыйшоў (Thanks for coming).

4. Дзякую and дзякуй. The everyday word дзякуй also takes the dative: Дзякуй вам! Дзякую is the verb (I thank) and sounds a little warmer or more personal.

Examples (6)

  1. Дзякую табе!

    Thank you!

Literally: I thank to you. Табе is the dative of ты.

  2. Дзякуем вам за дапамогу.

We thank you for the help.

Вам is dative; дапамогу is accusative after за.

  3. Я хачу падзякаваць маме за падарунак.

I want to thank my mom for the present.

Мама → маме in the dative.

  4. Ён падзякаваў нам за вячэру.

    He thanked us for dinner.

Падзякаваў is the perfective past: one act of thanking.

  5. Дзякую ўсім, хто прыйшоў.

Thank you to everyone who came.

Усім is the dative plural of усе.

  6. Мы дзякавалі сябрам за падтрымку.

We thanked our friends for their support.

Сябры → сябрам in the dative plural.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the person in the accusative, as in Russian.

    Дзякую цябе.
    Дзякую табе.

Дзякаваць takes the dative (каму?), so ты becomes табе and вы becomes вам.

  • Keeping -ава- in the present tense.

    Я дзякаваю вам.
    Я дзякую вам.

In verbs in -аваць, -ава- changes to -у- in the present tense: дзякую, дзякуеш.

  • Leaving the reason after за in the nominative.

    Дзякую вам за дапамога.
    Дзякую вам за дапамогу.

The reason after за is in the accusative: дапамога → дапамогу.
