Паўтара is used with masculine and neuter nouns and паўтары with feminine ones. The noun is genitive singular: паўтара года (a year and a half), паўтары гадзіны (an hour and a half).

How It Works

Паўтара and паўтары (stress on the last syllable: паўтара́, паўтары́) mean one and a half. Choose by the gender of the noun:

  • паўтара with masculine and neuter nouns: паўтара года, паўтара месяца, паўтара кілаграма, паўтара літра, паўтара вядра
  • паўтары with feminine nouns: паўтары гадзіны, паўтары тысячы, паўтары тоны

The noun is genitive singular (genitive singular endings), not plural: паўтара года, not гады. This differs from два, тры and чатыры, which take the plural.

Other cases. In everyday use паўтара and паўтары usually stay the same after prepositions, and the noun stays genitive singular: праз паўтара тыдня (in a week and a half), каля паўтара года (about a year and a half).

As a subject, паўтара takes a neuter singular verb: Прайшло паўтара месяца. (A month and a half passed.)

Common Mistakes

  • Using паўтара with a feminine noun.

    Фільм ідзе паўтара гадзіны.
    Фільм ідзе паўтары гадзіны.

    Гадзіна is feminine, so it takes паўтары.

  • Using паўтары with a masculine noun.

    Я прыеду праз паўтары тыдня.
    Я прыеду праз паўтара тыдня.

    Тыдзень is masculine, so it takes паўтара.

  • Putting the noun in the plural.

    Я жыву тут паўтара гады.
    Я жыву тут паўтара года.

    After паўтара the noun is genitive singular: года.
