Diminutive Suffixes
Diminutive suffixes make words small or affectionate: дом → домік (little house), сын → сынок (sonny), кніга → кніжка, мама → мамачка, сонца → сонейка, баба → бабуля.
How It Works
Diminutives are very common in Belarusian speech, especially with children, family and food. They can mean small, dear or simply friendly. The main suffixes by gender:
- Masculine: -ік / -ык (дом → домік, стол → столік, нож → ножык, ключ → ключык), -ок (сын → сынок).
- Feminine: -ка (кніга → кніжка, рука → ручка, хвіліна → хвілінка), -ачка (мама → мамачка), -уля (баба → бабуля).
- Neuter: -ейка (сонца → сонейка), -ка (слова → слоўка), -ца (акно → акенца).
Spelling rules.
- -ык comes after the always-hard consonants ж, ш, ч, р, ц (always-hard consonants): ножык, ключык. After other consonants, write -ік.
- Before і, д becomes дз and т becomes ц (tsekanye and dzekanye): сад → садзік, кот → коцік.
- Before -к-, г → ж, к → ч, х → ш: кніга → кніжка, рука → ручка, муха → мушка. These changes are different from the ones before -е (Г, К and Х before -е).
Gender stays the same, so adjectives and past-tense verbs agree as before: маленькі домік, сонейка выглянула (neuter).
Some diminutives have their own meaning: ручка is also a pen and a handle, and хлопчык is simply a boy. A polite request often uses a diminutive: Пачакай хвілінку! (Wait a moment!) The suffix -ка also makes feminine nouns for people, which is a different job: студэнтка (feminine nouns for people).

Common Mistakes
Forgetting the consonant change before -ка.
Дай мне кнігку.Дай мне кніжку.Before the suffix -к-, г changes to ж: кніга → кніжка.
Writing -ік after an always-hard consonant.
Дай мне ножік.Дай мне ножык.Ж is always hard, so the suffix is spelled -ык: ножык.
Keeping д before і.
Дзеці гуляюць у садіку.Дзеці гуляюць у садзіку.Before і, д becomes дз: сад → садзік.
