Belarusian often has two words for one role, one for a man and one for a woman: студэнт → студэнтка, настаўнік → настаўніца. Use the feminine word when you talk about a woman.

How It Works

1. The suffix -ка is the largest group, and it includes most nationalities:

  • студэнт → студэнтка (student)
  • беларус → беларуска (Belarusian)
  • сусед → суседка (neighbor)
  • спартсмен → спартсменка (athlete)

Some words change their stem a little: сябар → сяброўка (friend), паляк → полька (Pole).

2. The suffixes -ніца and -іца:

  • настаўнік → настаўніца (teacher)
  • пісьменнік → пісьменніца (writer)
  • вучань → вучаніца (pupil)
  • прадавец → прадаўшчыца (shop assistant), an irregular pair

3. The suffix -ыня. A few words use it: гаспадар → гаспадыня (host, hostess), спадар → спадарыня (Mr., Ms.).

4. When the masculine word is used for a woman. For many professions and official titles, the masculine noun is used for women too: Яна доктар (She is a doctor), Яна інжынер (She is an engineer).

Tip: nouns in -ка often add a vowel in the genitive plural: студэнтак (of the students). See genitive plural.
