Young-Animal Nouns with -ят-
Young-animal nouns grow a suffix: кацяня (kitten), кацяняці (of a kitten), кацяняты (kittens).
How It Works
Belarusian names many young animals with neuter nouns in -я (often -ня): кацяня (kitten), цяля (calf), кураня (chick), шчаня (puppy), ягня (lamb), парася (piglet), жарабя (foal).
Singular. The nominative and accusative stay the same. The genitive, dative and locative add -яці. The instrumental ends in -ём:
- N/A кацяня
- G/D/L кацяняці: аб кацяняці
- I кацянём: з кацянём
Plural. Every form has -ят-:
- N кацяняты
- G/A кацянят (animate, so the accusative equals the genitive)
- D кацянятам
- I кацянятамі
- L аб кацянятах
The same pattern gives цяля → цяляці → цяляты, кураня → кураняці → кураняты. Some of these nouns also have a form in -ё: кацянё. Дзіця (child) declines like this in the singular (дзіцяці), but its plural is дзеці.
