Comparative Adjectives in -ейшы

Level 3Sounds Like vyšéjšaâ stupenʹ na -ejšy

To say more ... with one word, add -ейш- or -эйш- to the adjective: цікавы → цікавейшы (more interesting), дарагі → даражэйшы (more expensive).

How It Works

1. How to build it. Take the adjective, remove -ы or -і, and add -ейшы:

  • цікавы → цікавейшы (more interesting)
  • моцны → мацнейшы (stronger)
  • цёплы → цяплейшы (warmer)
  • светлы → святлейшы (brighter)

The stress always falls on -ей-, so an unstressed о becomes а and an unstressed ё or е becomes я, exactly as akanye and yakanye predict: мо́цны → мацне́йшы, цёплы → цяпле́йшы.

2. -эйшы after hard consonants. After ж, ш, ч, р and дж, which are always hard in Belarusian, write -эйшы: стары → старэйшы (older), мудры → мудрэйшы (wiser), прыгожы → прыгажэйшы (more beautiful). Stems in г, к, х change to ж, ч, ш first: дарагі → даражэйшы, лёгкі → лягчэйшы, ціхі → цішэйшы. A few drop part of the stem: высокі → вышэйшы, блізкі → бліжэйшы, доўгі → даўжэйшы.

3. Irregular comparatives. Learn these as separate words:

  • добры → лепшы (better)
  • дрэнны → горшы (worse)
  • вялікі → большы (bigger)
  • малы → меншы (smaller)
  • малады → малодшы (younger)

For brothers and sisters, say старэйшы and малодшы: старэйшая сястра (older sister). Дабрэйшы also exists, but it means kinder, not better.

4. It is a full adjective. The comparative agrees with its noun in gender, number and case, just like any adjective: цікавейшы фільм, цікавейшая кніга, цікавейшыя фільмы. It can stand before the noun or after it as the predicate: Гэтая кніга цікавейшая. To say than, use за or чым: Мой брат мацнейшы за мяне.

5. When there is no -ейшы form. Not every adjective has one, and long adjectives often sound better with больш: больш цікавы means the same as цікавейшы. Never combine the two.

Examples (6)

  1. Гэтая кніга цікавейшая за тую.

This book is more interesting than that one.

Цікавы → цікавейшая agrees with the feminine кніга.

  2. Мой брат мацнейшы за мяне.

My brother is stronger than me.

Моцны → мацнейшы: the stress moves to -ей-, so о is written а.

  3. Гэты гатэль даражэйшы, але бліжэйшы да цэнтра.

This hotel is more expensive, but closer to the centre.

    Дарагі → даражэйшы (г → ж) and блізкі → бліжэйшы.

  4. Сёлетняе лета цяплейшае за леташняе.

This year's summer is warmer than last year's.

Цёплы → цяплейшае agrees with the neuter лета.

  5. У мяне ёсць лепшая ідэя.

    I have a better idea.

Лепшы is the irregular comparative of добры.

  6. Мая старэйшая сястра жыве ў Гродне.

My older sister lives in Hrodna.

Старэйшы is the usual word for an older sibling.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a Russian-style comparative ending in -ее.

    Гэтая кніга цікавее.
    Гэтая кніга цікавейшая.

Belarusian has no -ее comparative. Use the full adjective in -ейшы, which agrees with the noun.

  • Putting больш in front of a comparative that already means more.

    Гэта больш лепшы варыянт.
    Гэта лепшы варыянт.

Лепшы already means better. Use either the one-word comparative or больш with the plain adjective, never both.

  • Forgetting that the comparative agrees with its noun.

    Мая сястра старэйшы за мяне.
    Мая сястра старэйшая за мяне.

Сястра is feminine, so the comparative takes the feminine ending -ая.
